If you have to have food stamps to make ends meet, it looks like the state won’t ban you from having a snack, munching on chips, or enjoying a candy bar. A Florida House panel stripped a provision from a bill that would have banned the purchase of so called junk food with food stamps.
A proposal to prevent poor people from using federal assistance to buy certain snack foods was narrowly approved by a House committee Monday, but the sponsor said after heavy debate that he may change sections of the bill dictating what foods the aid can be used for.
A bill that would eliminate “non-healthy, non-staple” foods from those permitted under food assistance guidelines sparked a tart debate in the Senate Children, Families and Elder Affairs Committee on Wednesday.
