ADVANCES IN TECHNOLOGY
With the start of the 2017 hurricane season, there’s big news out of the National Hurricane Center. Advances in technology are leading to new forecasting tools.
CBS4 Chief Meteorologist Craig Setzer explains in this video.
COMBATING STORM SURGE
Storm surge is a term you hear a lot during hurricane season and it’s important to understand. Storm surge is one of the most devastating parts of the storm. Storm surge risk varies greatly along coastlines because each one is unique and poses its own dangers and here in South Florida it’s no different.
Understanding the risk storm surge poses to you and your home is crucial to being hurricane ready from Key West through the Broward Intracoastal. Remember, rising waters and waves are a real danger.
This year, the National Hurricane Center is using new maps indicating where storm surge might occur.
CBS4 Meteorologist Dave Warren explains more in this video.
Your pets are members of your family. Don’t leave them out of your hurricane plans. Just as you would have a plan for protecting the life and safety of your spouse and your children, you need to have a plan in place to make sure your pets are safe should you have to leave your home.
Storm complacency is a big concern in South Florida.
We’ve gone years without a direct hit but that nearly came to an end in 2016, when Hurricane Matthew threatened South Florida.
Emergency management officials hope the close call with Matthew snapped us out of our complacent ways but did it?
CBS4’s Anchor Rick Folbaum reports.
Nothing beats being in a storm to know exactly what’s happening with it. That’s where the Hurricane Hunter aircraft come in.
These planes are specially modified to investigate hurricanes, inside and out and CBS4 Chief Meteorologist Craig Setzer was with the brave men and women who fly through the eye of the storm when they recently came to South Florida.
Hurricanes and our vulnerability to them has changed the way buildings are built in South Florida. Case in point, the new Perez Art Museum Miami on Biscayne Bay.
PAMM has never had to deal with a hurricane but they’ll be ready when one threaten with surprisingly little preparation.
CBS4 Anchor Rudabeh Shahbazi explains why PAMM will be like the Rock of Gibraltar during a storm.
WEATHER EXTREMES & HURRICANE FORECAST
Hurricanes, tornadoes, flooding, blizzards. Weather extremes can occur anywhere.
CBS4 Meteorologist Lissette Gonzalez has more on that plus Craig Setzer is back with more on what forecasters are predicting for hurricane season 2017.
Hurricanes put a great deal of stress on many of the things we need most like power and cell phone usage.
That’s why Florida Power and Light is improving its storm response with the lessons learned from Hurricane Matthew.
The utility recently held a statewide hurricane drill. CBS4’s David Sutta explains what its new technology means for you.
HURRICANE ANDREW: 25 YEARS LATER
2017 marks 25 years since Hurricane Andrew roared across South Miami-Dade County.
The category 5 storm still holds the distinction as the worst natural disaster in U.S. history.
CBS4’s Gary Nelson takes a look back.
BOAT OWNERS DO’s & DON’TS + GENERATOR SAFETY
South Florida boat owners need to know the do’s and don’ts to securing your vessel before a storm and home generator safety is key to surviving after a storm.
