HOLLYWOOD (CBSMiami) - Police are trying to track down the person, or persons, who stabbed and beat a pit bull and then left it for dead inside a suitcase.

Hollywood officers found the trapped dog early Tuesday at 1945 Lee Street. Officers said they followed the puppy's cries to a vacant building and found a paw hanging out of a blue hardsided suitcase.

The dog, which has been named Ollie, was taken to the VCA Hollywood Animal Hospital where it was treated.

"It's heartbreaking, you can't imagine how somebody could do something so awful to an innocent animal," said veterinarian Dr. Nicole Patterson.

Ollie's injuries are extensive.

"He's got a lot of stab wounds all over his chest. The ones on his head were very deep, down to his skull. So all of the muscles on the top of his head were ripped open," said Patterson.

Patterson said Ollie's recovering from up to 30 stab wounds from his head to his paws. She said this has been one of the toughest cases of her career.

"It's definitely very emotional and yesterday was a hard day," she said.

Ollie will require more surgeries but Patterson said he should be okay.

"He should make a full recovery, it's just going to take a lot of time," she said.
