LAUDERHILL (CBSMiami) -- A single-car crash in Lauderhill ended in gunfire and a pregnant passenger being abandoned by the driver.

The bizarre series of events unfolded late Wednesday night, near W. Oakland Park Blvd and Inverrary Blvd W., after a 2009 Buick, with at least two people inside, slammed head-first into a palm tree.

Lauderhill Police said speeding played a factor in the crash.

"As soon as we came out we heard a boom," said Jean Joseph, who was leaving a bible study group and saw the aftermath.

When witnesses attempted to help, Joseph said the driver got violent with them, pulled out a gun and started shooting in the air. No one was struck.

The man then fled on foot, leaving a pregnant woman by herself still sitting in the passenger seat.

Police set up a search but were unable to locate the guy. Both the passenger and owner of the vehicle refused to cooperate with officers, they said.

The car suffered significant front-end damage, as did the city-owned palm tree.

Injuries to the driver are unknown. Police did not say whether or not the woman was hurt.
