MIAMI (CBSMiami/NSF) — After losing a six-candidate primary in August, North Miami Beach Democrat Jason Pizzo plans to challenge newly elected Sen. Daphne Campbell in 2018.

Campbell, a former House member, received 31 percent of the vote in the August 30th primary in Miami-Dade County's Senate District 38. Pizzo received 23.7 percent, the next-highest amount. Campbell then went on to defeat no-party candidate Phillip Brutus in the general election.

Pizzo, an attorney, loaned $770,000 of his own money to the unsuccessful campaign.

"My decision to run for office earlier this year was always focused on building bridges in what is Florida's most diverse state Senate district," Pizzo said in a statement Wednesday.

"That remains true today and it's why I am thrilled to continue my journey of public service by running for state Senate. It's important we have a leader who understands the unique challenges every community in District 38 faces, who appreciates the tough times many families face day in and day out."
