Debbie Wasserman Schultz On FBI's Comey: "He Made A Fiasco Over Investigation Process"

MIAMI (CBSMiami) – "Director Comey made a fiasco over that entire investigation process." Strong words Monday from U.S. Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D., Fla.) who spoke to CBS4's Jim Defede, host of Facing South Florida.

Last month, FBI Director James Comey dropped a bombshell on the race for president, announcing the Bureau would look into more emails potentially related to Hillary Clinton's use of a private email server. But over the weekend, he said 'never mind.' Comey notified Congress Sunday that a review of new emails connected to Clinton's servers did not produce evidence that would warrant charges.

Debbie Wasserman Schultz said it was all a fiasco from day one.

"From inappropriately, in July, holding a news conference to announce their conclusions to 11 days before the election, coming in and making a pronouncement and letting Congress know they are looking at new emails. Why he didn't just review the emails once they found them and send a letter to Congress after the Election is beyond me but he certainly made a pretty big mess of it."

Wasserman Schultz told DeFede her confidence in him is shaken. "I had tremendous respect for him but I think he handled it inappropriately and had colossally bad judgment and I look forward to hearing from him."

She also went on to say Comey should be held accountable.

"We should absolutely have congressional hearings because he should definitely be held accountable. He violated longstanding department of justice protocol, made an unacceptable decision to drop something that would absolutely affect the election very close to the election."

Speaking of Election Day, Wasserman Schultz is proud of the early voter turnout in South Florida which set records in at least three of the state's most populous counties including Miami-Dade and Broward.

"For Democrats in Florida we are really, exactly where we worked to be and where we needed to be and for me it's incredibly gratifying because we fight so hard every election cycle to make sure Broward and Miami-Dade counties come in at the numbers that we have historically had and that we know we need to be able to carry our nominee whether it's a mid-term or presidential."

Over 53,000 ballots were cast on Sunday alone in Miami-Dade, breaking the all-time daily record of 42,810 that had been set on Friday. Broward also had a record-setting Sunday with 44,216 people voting. The previous high, from Friday, was 36,276.

Wasserman Schultz is thrilled with the turn out.

"To see how much my two counties are over-performing and we have a good head of steam heading into Election Day tomorrow."
