On The Radar: Season Series – Part 10

No matter where you go in South Florida, high school football fans are talking playoffs and prospects these days.

With two weeks left in the regular season, many local coaches are trying to contact as many college coaches as possible for their seniors - while planting the seeds for the future with their underclassmen.

What many fans do not understand when it comes to recruiting is that whether your team is in the playoff hunt or not, there are always college scholarships that these athletes are playing for – and for that reason, the season is never over.

Attaining a college scholarship these days is on ongoing process that high school coaches, athletes and their parents are always working for. Any extra film that these athletes can get is a positive.

Dealing with college coaches for many decades, and talking with them year round, the recruiting never ends. They want to know as much about an athlete as possible, and will use as much film as it takes to evaluate the football player.

While we bring you prospects in every class, the coaches use the information and film as a resource to help them award these scholarships.

As we do throughout the year, each week we add six new athletes to the On The Radar series for all to check out. Today, we have some faces that many have watched throughout the year, along with football players some have never heard of before.

2018 – Traquan Butler, DB, 5-9, 175, Miami Killian: Butler is one of the emerging standouts in South Florida - having had had a banner season for the Cougars. Considered to be one of the prospects that everyone will be watching this offseason, his ball skills are amazing and his ability to read plays will make him one of the elite defensive secondary performers, His coaches and teammates believe that when the 2017 season rolls around, here is a talent that will continue to make an impact with the way he plays the game. Butler has speed and a knack for being around the ball at all times. Keep your eye on his progress. He is indeed very special.

2019 – Brandon Cohen, RB, 5-8, 163, Doral Ronald Reagan: Another emerging star who came on this season and put together a solid year, giving many a glimpse of what this program has for the future. Cohen is a quick and talented runner who has tremendous instincts and the ability to help the Bison and head coach John Lopez ass plenty of balance to an offensive attack that showed plenty of improvement toward the end of the season. This is someone who everyone will start watching into the offseason as he proved how valuable he will be. In addition to being an outstanding football talent, he has always made a major impact in the classroom.

2018 – Jamaree Miller, OLB/RB, 5-11, 180, Hollywood McArthur: If you are looking for the reasons why the Mustangs took Broward County by storm this season, here is certainly one of those young men who has made a major impact, having the skill level to line up on either side of the ball. Miller is an extremely gifted prospect who not only represents the future for head coach Laron Culpepper's team - but with a solid offseason, he will be the athlete that many colleges will start to follow. Being a versatile athlete, there is little doubt that if he stays healthy for the remainder of career, he will indeed be very special.

2017 – Vladimir Rivas, P/K, 5-10, 165, Doral Academy: One of the special teams players who has emerged as one of the best - not only locally, but someone has already shown that when he attends showcase events. Rivas is talented enough to more than hold his own against some of the elite prospects nationally. Having watched him at events and in games, you can see the explosive leg he has - and coaches have already been making positive comments. In a game that is often dictated by what a punter or kicker does, this is a talented prospect with a solid future.

2018 – D'Andre Romero, OLB/SS, 6-0, 175, Miramar Everglades: This talented young man started to come into his own this season for the Gators - and has already started to prepare for the offseason, where he will work on those skills that will attract college attention. While he will play the linebacker position at this level, look for college coaches to keep an eye on his progress with an eye toward being a safety at the next level. Romero is a quality football player who is starting to find his way onto the radar.

2019 – Jamari Williams, OL, 6-3, 245, Fort Lauderdale Cardinal Gibbons: This is a talented athlete that head coach Matt Dubuc and the Chiefs are excited about. Just a sophomore, expect this quality football talent to get bigger and continue learning the position. Williams has a tremendous work ethic that will add up over the next few years - with colleges already watching his progress. He has great footwork and the will to get better have become his trademarks. Is aware of what it will take to make that move to the next level, and while he has some time to continue working on his craft, things move along quickly. Williams is definitely a prospect to keep an eye on.
