Miami-Dade Has Nine New Locally Acquired Zika Cases

MIAMI (CBSMiami/NSF) - Nine more local acquired cases of the Zika virus have been confirmed for Miami-Dade, along with four travel related cases.
The state's Department of Health made the announcement Wednesday. They added that they also have another case but have been unable to determine where exposure occurred because the person traveled to Miami and to an area out of state that has "widespread Zika transmission."
The 14 cases brought the total number of diagnosed cases in the state to 1,078, according to the health department's website.
Three of the new travel-related cases were in Broward County, while another involved a pregnant woman.
The department does not list the counties of pregnant women who have been infected with the virus. Zika is particularly dangerous to pregnant women because it can cause severe birth defects.
Florida has had 115 Zika cases involving pregnant women.
