Miami Fire Rescue responded to the crash at 95 N.W. 23rd Street, just before 9:30 a.m. on Thursday.

The vehicle struck the side of the Miami Arts Charter School, shattering the glass lobby and sending debris flying.

A school security officer sitting in the area escaped harm “thanks to a support wall,” according to school officials.

The driver needed to be extricated from the car. He was taken to Ryder Trauma Center with an injury to his arm.

Two students who witnessed the accident were not hurt but were shaken up. They were evaluated by paramedics and released to school staff.

Miami Police are investigating what may have caused the driver lose control.

He was speeding for sure. That’s a low traffic area for you to lose control of your car and hit the side of the school like that, he had to have been speeding. I hope he’s prosecuted. He could have killed a kid.

This was not “just an accident.” Obviously excessive speed was involved, that’s Physics 101. Vehicle vs. building happens way too much around here, something needs to be done right away. It’s not an FDOT road so it’s something the City of Miami can and should address. This kind of thing doesn’t happen in traffic calmed situations where the road design is for 25-30 mph traffic and it’s physically difficult to attain high speeds.
