Lauren's List: Back To School Tips

MIAMI (CBSMiami) - School starts today, August 22nd, in Miami-Dade and Broward counties.

So today's "Lauren's List" is geared to the students out there and the parents who want to see them succeed!

It may only be Day 1, but it's time to start thinking about how to improve academic performance.

There are all sorts of study hacks out there, and these are just a handful of the ones scientists say really work, according to Greatist.com.

Study When Sleepy
This won't work for an all-night cram session, but research shows studying a little bit each night before bed actually strengthens new memories. Just try not to study IN bed, as that can actually make your sleep more stressful and restless.

Change Up The Scenery
Scientist say studying the same stuff in the same place isn't your best bet. Instead, try moving to different locations. From the library, to the coffee shop, to the dining room table, moving from place to place forces the brain to form new associations with the same material, thus creating a stronger memory.

Load up On Omegas
Omega-3 fatty acids are popular for their brain-boosting properties. Some scientists even say they can help reduce test anxiety if consumed before a test. Add certain fish, nuts and a bit of olive oil to your diet to boost your omegas.

Work It Out
I'm not talking about that tough math problem. I mean this literally. Build your body and brain strength at the same time. Research has found just half an hour of aerobic exercise can improve brain-processing speed and other cognitive abilities.

I want to know your best strategies for making the grade.
