Delta Passengers Frustrated By Delays, Long Lines

MIAMI (CBSMiami) - Delta Airlines is trying to get back on track a day after a power outage knocked them out of the air for several hours.

Thousands of flights were delayed or canceled worldwide on Monday. The airline expects to cancel another 250 flights on Tuesday and approximately 200 more will be delayed.

"We were able to bring our systems back on line and resume flights within a few hours yesterday but we are still operating in recovery mode," said Delta's Dave Holtz. "We are sorry for what many of our customers have experienced over the past 24 hours, including those who remain at airports and continue waiting for their flights. We are doing everything we can to return our operation to normal reliability, but we do expect additional delays and cancellations."

Hundreds of passengers that were not able to fly out on Monday from either Ft. Lauderdale-Hollywood International or Miami International were back at the airports early Tuesday morning trying to re-book their flight.

"In the morning we were very excited to go home and then didn't leave, the flight was canceled," said Edmar Petit.

Petit is trying to get home in time to make it to her final exam. Lee Kreyer said he must be home for a very special occasion.

"We were trying to depart at 7:05 a.m. The flight got delayed until 11:45 a.m. to Atlanta. We were thinking of renting a car and driving home, I don't want to be stuck here, I need to get back, it's my 25th wedding anniversary tomorrow," said Kreyer.

Tuesday morning at Delta's ticket counter at Miami international Airport the line once again stretched to near the doors with passengers whose flights were canceled, re-booked or delayed. Many passengers have complained that they were not able to re-book their flights online or over the phone, instead they had to go to the airport and do it in person.

When Elizabeth Bula arrived with her 12-year-old nephew she encountered a different problem.

"We got to the ticket counter and they told us because he is a minor and everything that happened yesterday he won't be able to travel today," said Bula.

Petite also got some news she didn't like. Her flight was re-booked to Wednesday, meaning she will not make her final exam. Kreyer will hopefully make it to Wisconsin in time to be with his wife.

"We are going to Kansas City then another flight, don't know where, then Minneapolis-St. Paul. It's good for me because someone will pick me up take me home and make my 25th anniversary tomorrow," said Kreyer.

Passengers whose flights were canceled or significantly delayed will get a refund. Others will get to re-book reschedule without paying an additional fee.

Those traveling on Delta Tuesday should check the status of their flight at delta.com.
