Roundup: Cooper Breaks National Record At Junior Olympic Games

Tyrese Cooper of Miami Xpress Track and Field Club broke his own national record at the AAU Junior Olympic Games in Houston, Tex.

The American High rising sophomore finished the meet with three national titles and two national records.

Cooper ran a wind-legal 10.36 seconds in the boys' 15-16 100-meters.

Cooper won the 400-meters title in 45.23, the fastest time in the U.S. this year while lowering his own national freshman class record. In the 400 prelims, he broke Obea Moore's 15-16 AAU national record in 45.54.

He finished the day with a wind-legal 20.89 to win the 200-meters title.

During the 200 prelims, Cooper set another freshman national record in a wind-legal personal best 20.62.

Also at the meet, Correena Saintilmond of Hallandale posted a personal best of 17 feet, 4 inches in the long jump.

SWIMMING
Kathleen Golding, a rising sophomore at Cooper City, won two titles at the USA Swimming Futures Championships at Georgia Tech's McCauley Aquatic Center in Atlanta.

Golding, 15, competing for South Florida Aquatic Club where she trains, won the 100-meter freestyle in a lifetime-best 56.31, shaving 1.24 seconds off her previous best of 57.55.

Golding was seeded third going into the event. She first lowered her seed time in prelims in 57.28, the fastest swim of the morning.

The U.S. Olympic Trials qualifier also won the 200-meter freestyle in a best time 2:01.99, dropping nearly six seconds after being seeded 34th.

Golding also had one second and two-thirds in other events, all in best times. Golding was second in the 400-meter freestyle in 4:19.38.

She was also third in the 50-meter freestyle in 26.45 and 100-meter butterfly in 1:01.74. She also swam on two relays that finished in the Top 10.

South Florida Aquatic Club's women's team finished sixth with 155 points and tenth in combined with 171. Golding finished with 89 of those points in the high point award category.

DIVING
Fort Lauderdale Diving Team's Johanna Holloway of Westminster Academy won the 16-18 gold medal on three-meter springboard with 280.55 points at the AT&T USA Diving National Championships in Moultrie, Ga. Holloway worked her way back into contention to win back-to-back national titles after finishing tenth in semifinals.

"I am super excited," Holloway said. "I wasn't expecting to win because this is my first year in 16-18. And I'm not really a 3-meter specialist, so it was really a shocker."

Zach Allen of Cardinal Gibbons won a bronze medal in the 16-18 1-meter springboard with 508 points.
