WILTON MANORS (CBSMiami) - A truck plowed into a building in Wilton Manors early Tuesday morning.
Police said the driver of the truck, which was towing a small trailer, lost control and slammed into a duplex in the 2600 block of Powerline Road just before 7 a.m.
The crash punched a big hole in the building's wall.
The man inside the home - Kamel Bandhu - narrowly avoided being hit. He was taking care of his pet cockatoo named Bombo.
"This morning I go in I saw good morning Bombo how you doing baby. You know loving him, whatever. I step away, ten seconds later I hear the loudest crash I ever heard," said Bandhu. "I didn't know what it was. I thought Jesus was coming back ...I thought my ceiling was collapsing. I thought the worst."
Following the crash, he said he looked for Bombo.
"The first thing I did initially was to go into the room and secure Bombo, take him out of the room and close the door because I heard some like gas or water. Again, I thought it was structural damage....I didn't know what it was," said Bandhu.
The driver of the truck said he was forced to swerve after a vehicle in front of him stopped abruptly.
Le Young called 911 after seeing what happened.
"The truck was speeding and the car was speeding," said Young. "The car, I guess, tried to cut in front of him and he swerved over."
"Then I opened the door to see what was going on and there was a freaking van in my room," said Bandhu who said he cannot live there anymore and plans to move in with a friend.
Luckily, no one was injured in the incident.
Police in Wilton Manors said the driver - Jose Benitz Joy of Fort Lauderdale - was cited for following too closely.
