MIAMI (CBSMiami) – The catalyst for what is the worst mass shooting in U.S. history may have been something that happened in Miami.

CBS4's Jim DeFede spoke to sources in trying to learn more about what motivated Omar Mateen to open fire in an Orlando night club overnight Sunday. Mateen was killed in a shoot out with authorities.

Mateen's father is telling a story about an incident that happened in Miami. His father said the alleged incident happened in Bayside a couple of months ago in which Mateen reportedly was angered after seeing two men kissing.

Miami Police on Sunday said they have no record of encountering Mateen or of him being in South Florida within the last six months but they are still going through records.

Sources told DeFede a conference call was held between the FBI, Homeland Security and Florida law enforcement to talk about the deadly attack and possible aftermath.

Sources say law enforcement is increasing patrols around gay clubs, increasing security at South Florida airports and seaports and stepping up patrols around mosques to guard against retaliation against the Muslim community.
