MIAMI (CBSMiami) – Thousands of students from across South Florida attended the 11th annual CBS4 S.T.E.A.M. Day Tuesday prior to the Miami Marlins vs. Tampa Bay Rays game at Marlins Park. Previously known as Weather Day, S.T.E.A.M. stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math.

Elementary and middle school students from Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach counties took part in the fun-filled, science-focused educational field trip.

CBS4 Chief Meteorologist Craig Setzer, along with Meteorologists Lissette Gonzalez, John Gerard and Nicole Mitchell hosted the event from the field. CBS4's Vanessa Borge roamed the stands with all the young fans from the schools.

The pre-game program was designed to teach kids basic concepts of weather and climate and how these topics relate to living in South Florida.

Weather-related topics covered were thunderstorms, lightning, tornadoes, wind and hurricanes.

The kids were also asked a series of 25 weather-related questions which they answered on a game-based learning app called Kahoot. Questions and answers were displayed on the Marlins jumbotron.

Wrapping up the event was a catapult pitching competition between Ramblewood Middle School in Broward County and Coral Park High School in Miami. The winner was the team whose catapult could throw the most strikes. The winner? The Coral Park High Ram Tech team won with two strikes thrown to the catcher, Billy the Marlin.

CBS4 Weather Day has been officially approved by all three South Florida school districts and complies with Florida's Sunshine State Standards.

Weather Day is a collaborative effort of CBS4, the Miami Marlins, the National Weather Service, and Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach county public schools.

The students who attended CBS4 S.T.E.A.M. Day were invited to stay for the Marlins v. Rays game where CBS4 Anchor Rick Folbaum threw out the first pitch. And it was a strike! Nice job Rick!
