DEERFIELD BEACH (CBSMiami) – The National Weather Service says thunderstorm wind damage is responsible for minor damage to some homes and property in Deerfield Beach on Wednesday.

The storm came through the 400 block of NW 2nd Way around 5:15 p.m. quickly and the force of the winds took residents by surprise, especially Francis Stewart, who heard her carport being ripped violently from her house. It ended up next door – on her neighbor's house.

"I thought the whole house was gonna tear apart," Stewart said.

Stewart said she was in a back room of the house she's lived in for nearly 50 years when she heard the noise of a thunderstorm.

"Whoo, whoo, whoo, bam, bam," she said, describing the sound.

The noise was the wind ripping her carport off its supports and tossing it onto her neighbor's house.

"I can't get the noise out of my head," she said, describing the scene as worse than scary.

It was also scary for Jackie McCall who lives across the street from Stewart. He watched the winds whip up in his driveway.

"It went across the street, when it went across the street, it grabbed the roof, snatched it up in the air," McCall said.

He feared for Stewart and is glad she's OK.

The storm snapped a couple of trees and threw a large shed from one yard to another.

Albert Jackson was riding his bike just a few feet away from the wicked winds. He wonders what would have happened had he been right in the middle of it.

"I could of landed anywhere," he said.

Neighbors helped clean up and residents were glad the damage was confined to property and not people.

"As long as no lives were lost, no one was injured, materialistic things can always be replaced," he said.
