MIAMI (CBSMiami) -- Miami-Dade School officials are voting on whether to ban the use of hoverboards at schools.

On Wednesday, members of the school board are taking up the issue of hoverboards being used on school property.

According to school officials, the vote comes after several incidents, some of which resulted in violent altercations.

In one instance, a student allegedly punched an administrator after they tried to take away their hoverboard. That alleged incident remains under investigation.

Hoverboards sparked a firestorm of controversy over their safety after several batteries caught fire.

Since the machine's rise in popularity, in December, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has received reports of more than 60 hoverboards exploding, smoking or bursting into flames.

The incidents were found to be caused by faulty lithium ion batteries. Damage to the separators can lead to an internal short-circuit that can cause the battery to overheat and burst into flames. A crash could also prompt a battery fire.

Due to concerns about fires and explosions linked to hoverboards, several retailers have opted not to sell the products and some college campuses have banned it.
