MIAMI (CBSMiami) -- Former Cuban leader Fidel Castro made a rare public appearance on state television following last month's visit by President Barack Obama.

On Thursday, Castro spoke to school children on what would have been the 80th birthday of fellow revolutionary and deceased wife of current Cuban leader Raul Castro, Vilma Espin.

Castro, 89, told the children who attend a school named after Espin that: "this type of school is getting close to a kind of dream."

"I am sure that on a day like today Vilma would be very happy. She sacrificed her life for the revolution and she left energy on the way. Left it through her effort and she fought for that," said Castro.

Seated in a wheelchair and wearing a white track suit he was seen interacting with the students after his talk.
