MIAMI (CBSMiami) – Police in North Miami Beach are trying to find out what led to three people inside a car being shot near a busy intersection.

North Miami Beach Police shut down NE 6th Avenue approaching busy 167th Street after three people were shot at about 6:45 Saturday evening.

As police arrived at that scene they learned the three people had driven themselves to the hospital, which became a second crime scene.

"All we know at this time is they were in traffic and the shooting occurred while the victims were inside their vehicle," said Sgt. Jason Ochoa.

He told CBS4 Reporter Donna Rapado that investigators were working to find out if the shooter, or shooters, were in another car or on foot, and whether or not it was a case of road rage.

One of the victims was shot in the head, another in the abdomen and one in the back.

A witness, who preferred to remain anonymous, said he was walking with two others a block away from the shooting when they suddenly heard rapid gunfire.

Nearly two dozen gunshots went off before two cars sped past them, he said.

"He went into my neighborhood and he made a U-turn, coming back to the crime scene," the man told Rapado. "It coulda been me, it coulda been you. It coulda been anybody, it coulda been my grandmother. South Florida, it's a shame. You gotta be armed to protect yourself."

The attack is alarming because it also happened in the middle of an intersection that sees a lot of traffic.

"This is an extremely dangerous situation," Sgt. Ochoa said. "It's a very busy intersection on a Saturday at 6:44, it's extremely busy. Lots of vehicle traffic, lots of pedestrians."

Anyone who was in the area at the time of the shooting is urged to call Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers at (305) 471-TIPS.
