MIAMI (CBSMiami/AP) - The man who federal prosecutors say was the mastermind behind a $4.8 million gold heist in North Carolina pleaded not guilty to robbery and firearms charges in Miami federal court.

Adalberto Perez, 46, entered the plea Thursday morning, trial is set for May.

Perez reportedly used a GPS device to track the tractor-trailer heading from Miami to Massachusetts. Investigators say pepper spray was released by remote control to sicken the driver and a passenger before the robbery along Interstate 95.

Three armed thieves intercepted the truck, bound the hands of the two people inside and fled with the loot in a van.

Perez was arrested at his Opa-locka home almost a year after the March 2015 robbery.

Federal prosecutors want to seize Perez's vehicles, cash, homes, guns, a boat and jewelry. Court papers show prosecutors traced the property to Perez after the robbery.
