NORTH LAUDERDALE (CBSMiami) – A shooting early Monday has claimed the life of a 35-year-old mother and left her teenage son hospitalized. Another small child who was with them was not wounded.

Family members told CBS4's Peter D'Oench that Candace Joy McKinney was killed and her teenage son, 18-year-old Kareem Brice Barnett, was rushed to Broward Health North Medical Center where he was operated on after being shot.

State officials said there would be a shelter hearing on Tuesday for Barnett's young sibling who was with him and his mother at the North Lauderdale apartment complex.

It all happened at around 12:30 a.m. when the Broward Sheriff's Office and North Lauderdale Fire Rescue sent deputies and paramedics to 1165 Cove Lake Road after receiving a 911 call about a medical incident.

When deputies arrived, they found the body of McKinney inside a Lakeview Cove apartment. The sheriff's office said a male was also shot. Early Monday evening, authorities officially confirmed the victims' identities.

As investigators tried to piece together what happened, family of the victims appeared at the scene.

One woman could be seen on her knees in front of an officer as another woman tried to help her up.

One of the women could be heard saying, "Please sir" repeatedly.

One relative shouted out to another family member, "Kareem got shot. They won't say what happened to Candace."

Later in the morning, a car was towed away from the crime scene.

Nina Duarte told D'Oench that she heard the gunshots ring out at the apartment building.

"It's definitely not something you want to hear when you're going to work," said Duarte. "I thought it was a machine broke. It was like pow, pow, pow, but like four times, five times and then it stopped but I never heard like any screams. I never thought it was like a gunshot."

Neighbor Levy Bolivar knows the youngster who was wounded.

"To my knowledge, good kid, never got into any trouble. I played basketball with him, so this is really surprising that something would happen in his household," said Bolivar.

Meantime, investigators are looking for clues.

"We do know that there's a woman who was dead. She is somebody's child. She is somebody's loved one. At this point, we're focused on just trying to find out what happened to her," said Joy Oglesby with BSO.

"I think something happened and it kind of scares you a little bit. You know, because anything could happen anywhere. It doesn't matter where you live," said Bolivar.

No word on a motive in this case or on a shooter.

Oglesby said BSO hoped that more witnesses would come forward.

Anyone with information is asked to call Broward Crime Stoppers at (954) 493- TIPS.
