MIAMI (CBSMiami) – Before President Barack Obama was in Argentina, he made a historic visit to Cuba.

And on heels of the president's trip, American contractor Alan Gross paid a visit to Miami.

His release from a Cuban prison – after five years of incarceration – was considered part of critical steps that led to this change U.S.-Cuban relations.

On Wednesday, Gross met with CBS4's Chief Investigative Reporter Michele Gillen and gave a thumbs up to the message the president sent while on the island nation.

"The fact that he called to the Cuban people and then he delineated between the government, I thought that was really interesting and I thought he did an excellent job in doing that delineation," Gross said.

Gross said he was arrested in 2009 while working on expanding internet service for the small Cuban-Jewish community.
