MIAMI (CBSMiami) – The days of being forced to buy the same gaming console as your friends to play online together could finally be over.

On Monday, ID@Xbox Director Chris Charla announced Xbox Live will natively support cross-platform play between Xbox One, Windows 10 and other "online multiplayer networks."

While Microsoft didn't specifically mention Sony's Playstation 4, the motive is clear. They want to expand into new gaming frontiers by giving an extra tool to the developers.

"Of course, it's up to game developers to support this feature, and Xbox Live players will always have the option of choosing to play only with other Xbox Live players," Charla explained.

Psyonix's Rocket League will be one of the first games to support the functionality. It will allow Xbox One and PC players to play against each other, with "an open invitation for other networks to participate as well."

The decision could also be a way to bolster sales, as the Xbox One has been lagging behind the PS4 in sales.

Console exclusive games and playing with friends are two key motivating factors when purchasing a system.

Microsoft could be banking on the idea that gamers on the fence can pick the Xbox One without the fear of being isolated from their friends on other consoles.
