LAUDERHILL (CBSMiami) – With a beaten and bruised face, Douglas Brochet is more in love with his wife of 50 years than ever.

"She's a good woman," he said, looking at her while speaking to CBS4's Ted Scouten.

A surveillance camera at a Shell gas station at 1901 North State Road 7 captured a man attacking Brochet on Sunday as he prepared to pay the cashier.

That's when his wife, Fern Brochet, said, "Not on my watch!"

"You just sprang right into action," Scouten said.

Laughing, she responded, "I never thought about anything. That was the only thing I thought about doing."

Without thinking of her own safety, she put herself in between her husband and his attacker, eventually chasing him off.

"She's very courageous," Douglas said.

"No I'm not!" she laughed.

Jovaughn Walker is accused of beating the 81-year-old Canadian snowbird while holding some type of metal object. He left plenty of cuts and bruises.

"My forehead," Douglas pointed out, "my left side, right side."

He also has two black, bloody eyes and eight stitches.

Before leaving, Brochet said Walker hopped into his Jaguar but didn't steal it.

The crime spree wasn't over yet. Walker is accused of going on a rampage with a sword at a Swap Shop.

Surveillance video showed him bringing a blade down on a 49-year-old man who works there.

"I hear this scream," said fellow vendor Lawrence Hawkins, "worse than a horror film, worse, this is real life happening!"

Hawkins heard all the commotion and ran to help. By this time he said Walker was already running away. He was on his tail. He said when Walker put the sword down he and another man tackled him –holding him until police arrived.

"It just set in like, I get to get into action," he said.  "I wasn't thinking about my life, I was just thinking about the next life, somebody's kid, somebody's son, sister, mother auntie, getting hurt.  I couldn't live with that on my conscience."

Walker is hospitalized undergoing a psychological evaluation.  He is being held with no bond for now.  He's also accused of a carjacking in Deerfield Beach.
