BRECKENRIDGE, Colo. (CBSMiami) – CBS4's Chief Meteorologist Craig Setzer and other meteorologists from around the country are meeting in Breckenridge, Colorado for an annual weather conference where they'll discuss the latest in climate and weather.

On Tuesday, Dr. Lora Koenig from the National Snow and Ice Center discussed new findings about the ice covering Greenland.

One concern is that rising global temperatures could melt ice near the North and South Pole resulting in sea level rise.

Recent studies have found that in parts of Greenland, large lakes of water exist under the ice much like Florida's aquifers.  The concern is that the water under the ice contains warmth that could cause additional ice melt.

Dr. Koenig said that South Florida is especially sensitive to sea level rise since much of the area is low lying and close to sea level. Additional melting from Greenland could raise ocean levels resulting in greater impacts to South Florida residents.

Koenig said additional research using satellite, airplane radar and ground observations will give an indication of just how much the oceans could rise in the future.
