According to Miami-Dade police, Aime and a female friend went to the 5th floor of the communications building after a school event. When he attempted to jump from the side of the building to the other side, he didn't make it. He was rushed to the Ryder Trauma Center where he died.
Police are awaiting autopsy results to see if drugs or alcohol was involved.
Aime described himself on his LinkedIn page as being half Scottish and half Chilean and wrote, "I have grown up in many places including Holland, Brazil, and the United states."
At Adventure Sports Miami in Coconut Grove, Aime's kiteboard instructor told CBS4 everyone loved him. She said Aime was very athletic and loved being on UM's kiteboarding team.
One of Aime's former schoolmates from Palmer Trinity in Pinecrest described him as an extremely good soccer player and a genuinely nice guy.
"It didn't matter who you were, what grade you were in, he was really easy to talk to and get along with," Dani Littke told CBS4's Donna Rapado. "His passing has really struck everyone very harshly."
Palmer Trinity posted the following on their Facebook page.
"Stefano Aime, Palmer Trinity alumnus, Class of 2012, died early Wednesday morning following an accident on campus at the University of Miami. Stefano's death is devastating to his family, his many friends, and the entire Palmer Trinity community. Our hearts are heavy as we try to come to terms with this tremendous loss. Stefano was a senior at the University of Miami, majoring in business. He studied in Rome last spring, and worked at the popular on-campus eatery, the Rathskeller. Our thoughts and prayers are with Stefano's family and friends. Palmer Trinity School will notify the community of further details as soon as they receive them."
Word spread around the university campus quickly Wednesday, shocking students.
"It's really, really upsetting. Really sad. It's so out of nowhere and it's really sad to think that it's someone I probably have seen around campus," said UM student Natalie Hilvert.
Aime's death comes a day before finals get underway, with graduation is scheduled for next week. It was something Hilvert's friend acknowledged adds to the pain.
Jennifer Coren added, "With finals and everything, there's so much pressure and stress going on right now, that it's so unfortunate that a lot of his friends have to grieving right now at this time."
