Argument Turns Deadly Over Pair Of High-Heeled Shoes

POMPANO (CBSMiami) -- The lives of two women have been forever altered after a deadly dispute allegedly over footwear.

Nicole Hewitt, a mother of four, died over the weekend in what investigators said was a fight over a pair of high-heeled shoes.

Her uncle, Charlie Watson, found his niece with a swollen face Sunday morning, hours after the Broward Sheriff's Office said she was punched by 18-year-old Cortez Fields, a woman she had known for years.

"It just broke my heart," said a stunned Watson. "I couldn't deal with it, I just walked off."

According to the arrest report, Fields went to Hewitt's home Saturday night to ask for shoes that Hewitt had previously borrowed. When a witness stepped in to ask Fields to leave, Fields allegedly became irate and punched Hewitt in the face.

The force knocked Hewitt to the ground hard enough that her head impacted a concrete stairwell. The witness also said as Hewitt tried to get up, Fields continued punching her.

As Fields ran away, the witness told police she was overheard saying, "I never killed anyone before."

Authorities said they arrived to the scene early Sunday morning after a bruised and swollen Hewitt reported the incident. However, she declined medical treatment.

A few hours later Hewitt was dead.

"It should have never went that far. Over shoes, if that was the case. To me, it was jealousy, envy or something," said Anquana Thomas, a friend of the victim.

Fields remains behind bars, charged with aggravated battery. However, that could be upgraded once the findings from an autopsy are released from the Medical Examiner's office.
