MIAMI (CBSMiami/AP) --  The Miami Marlins gave an official welcome to their new manager.

Bright and early Monday morning, team officials announced Don Mattingly as the head of the team.

The newly hired manager had a few words to say himself following the announcement.

"The consensus around baseball is that this is a talented club," said Mattingly. "For me, that is the single biggest thing for me coming to Miami."

Mattingly said during the hiring process, he felt very comfortable with Marlins owner Jeffrey Loria.

CBS4's Jim Berry asked Mattingly how he measured success.

"I told these guys from the very I came here not to start losing but to start winning," said Mattingly.

The former Dodgers manager was hired by Miami less than a week after he left Los Angeles, the only team he's managed since retiring as a player.

In five seasons as skipper, he went 446-363 (.551%) with two playoff appearances, including one trip to the NLCS. In 2013, he came 2nd in voting for Manager of the Year.

Mattingly becomes the 15th manager in Marlins history.

Fun Fact: In 1987, Mattingly hit an MLB-record 6 grand slams in one season with the Yankees.
