Hurricane Joaquin Racing Toward Cooler Waters

MIAMI (CBSMiami) - Hurricane Joaquin is slowly weakening as it heads out to sea.
At 5 p.m. the center of the system was about 565 miles south-southwest of Cape Race, Newfoundland.
Maximum sustained winds have hovered at 80 mph with higher gusts. Hurricane force winds extend outward up to 45 miles from the center and tropical storm force winds extend outward up to 275 miles.
Joaquin is moving toward the east-northeast near 23 mph, and this motion is expected to continue during the next 24 hours.
Some weakening is forecast during the next 48 hours, and Joaquin is expected to lose tropical characteristics on Wednesday.
There are no coastal watches or warnings in effect.
Swells generated by Joaquin will continue to affect Bermuda during the next day or so. Swells are affecting much of the mid-Atlantic and northeast coast of the United States and are increasing along coastal areas of Atlantic Canada, and these swells are expected to continue for the next day or two. Life-threatening surf and rip current conditions are likely in association with these swells.
