MIAMI (CBSMiami) – A number of ceremonies were held across Miami-Dade and Broward on Friday to mark the anniversary of the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center and the United States Pentagon.

At Tropical Park on Bird Road, Miami-Dade Police and Fire Rescue hosted a "We Will Never Forget" remembrance ceremony for police officers and firefighters killed in the attacks. Of the more than 3,000 people who died, nearly 350 were New York City police officers and firefighters who sacrificed their lives when the World Trade Center Towers collapsed around them.

The Broward Sheriff's Office held its Patriot Day ceremony at the Signature Grand in Davie.

The Miami-Dade Aviation Department marked the anniversary with a remembrance ceremony at Miami International Airport's Flag of Honor memorial, located near Gate D25 in the North Terminal. The memorial lists the names of all who perished in the terrorist attacks.

Miami Dade College held a remembrance ceremony on their North Campus.

This year's observance focused on Honoring Freedom by honoring those who serve and protect our nation. Previously, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey generously donated two steel artifacts from the fallen World Trade Center towers to MDC that are now permanently installed at the College and where the ceremony will take place.

In Broward, ceremonies were held at Pompano Beach High School and Western High School.

Each school year, students at Western High School in Davie come together to pay homage to the thousands who lost their lives on September 11th. A student constructed memorial was first designed and dedicated to this date in 2002, and has continued to serve as a symbol for Western High students to hold the promise ceremony "We Will Never Forget." The monument is a reproduction of the Twin Towers, surrounded by the Pentagon, with a flagpole placed in the outline of the state of Pennsylvania.

In the Keys, a ceremony was held in the lobby of the main Detention facility on Stock Island. Lt. Colonel Tommy Taylor spoke about the terrorist attacks. A memorial of that day was unveiled during the ceremony and will remain in the main jail lobby in reminder of those who lost their lives that day.
