Pompano Beach Boy Dies After Being Hit By Car

FT LAUDERDALE (CBSMiami) - A Pompano Beach boy was killed, a second seriously injured, after they inadvertently rode a bike into the path of oncoming traffic.

Tuesday evening, around 6:30 p.m., Douglas Sams was pedaled a bike out of the private drive for Palmview Elementary School near NE 1st Avenue and NE 26th Street with his friend Anthony Robinson, 11, riding on the back pegs of the bike.

As Sams, 10, began to cross NE 1st Avenue he was struck by a Chevrolet Camaro driven by 24-year old Herbie Pierre-Paul.

Broward sheriff's investigators say Pierre-Paul's view of the school's driveway was blocked by a minivan parked on the grass swale on the west side of NE 1st Avenue. They believe Sams never saw the car coming because of the parked minivan.

Pierre-Paul saw the boys too late and swerved in an attempt to miss the bike but unfortunately struck them. Investigators said they do not believe Pierre-Paul was speeding at the time of the accident. He stayed at the scene and waited for sheriff's deputies.

Sams and Robinson were treated on scene by Pompano Beach Fire Rescue and transported to area hospitals with critical injuries. Sams died at the hospital, Robinson was listed as critical but in stable condition.
