HIALEAH (CBSMiami) – Police believe an early morning fire Monday, which destroyed three cars, was intentionally set.

The cars were parked next to each other in the lot of a Hialeah apartment complex 7287 W 24 Avenue.

Residents woke up to the sound of an explosion around 5 AM Monday.

"It was a big explosion. I didn't know what it was until I looked out the window and the pickup truck caught on fire," said Reinaldo Aponte, a witness. "

Aponte called 911.

"If I didn't come to the rescue probably this whole lot would have been on fire," he said.

Witnesses panicked as they watched the flames spread.

"I'm thinking all the cars are gonna explode and the only thing I could do is knock on people's doors and try to get them out of here, try to save the people," said Rosemary Abreu.

Three cars, a pickup truck, a BMW and a van, were all destroyed as a result of the fire.

The Hialeah Fire Department believes someone set the cars on fire and took off.

Lester Cepero said his sister's car was the first to go up in flames. He believes her brand new pickup truck may have been targeted.

"Probably something that happened a long time ago, I don't know, probably caught up," Cepero said.

When fire crews arrived, according to Hialeah Police, they were notified of a person acting suspiciously near the area. The man was questioned but later released.

"We're scared for our lives. There's no security here, there's no cameras here," Abreu said.

Aponte also said, "we're concerned about the safety."

No injuries were reported in relation to the incident.

The State Fire Marshal is on scene investigating a possible cause.
