MIAMI (CBSMiami) -- Miami-Dade Fire officials are urging locals to be safe while boating with children.

With summer in full swing, it's not unheard of to take the boat out for a day of fun in the sun.

But officials are asking boaters to make sure to keep their children protected while on board.

They issued safety tips including:

-Make sure your child wears a life jacket that fits snug.

-Don't drink alcohol while boating with children so they can be supervised properly.

-Protect your child from getting chills by keeping a blanket or towel on hand.

-Make sure to know CPR in case of an emergency.

For parents who choose to let their youngsters swim, fire officials ask that you make sure your child understand the potential hazards of being in the water including uneven footing, sea currents, and changes in the weather.
