FT LAUDERDALE (CBSMiami) - An early morning attack on a Ft. Lauderdale cabbie was caught on camera.

Now the Broward Sheriff's Office has released the video of the man who choked and robbed 47-year old Jean Paul Roosevelt in hopes that someone recognizes him and gives Crime Stoppers a call.

On May 9th, Roosevelt picked up men just before 2 a.m. near 4401 N.W. 31 Avenue.

One man got out but then he says the second guy wanted him to stop where there were a crowd of men in dark clothes

"He told me stop ..and I'm not gonna stop," said Roosevelt.

Soon after he got in the cab, the man started yelling and arguing with Roosevelt. At one point, he demanded that Roosevelt hand over his money and phone.

The robber then grabbed a seat belt and began to choke Roosevelt while the cab was still moving.

"He's choking me....but I didn't want to lose my power, " said Roosevelt.

As the car continued to move slowly forward, the robber climbed on top Roosevelt and hit him in the face.

He drove the cab to a Marathon gas station on W. Sunrise Boulevard where the man jumped out of the car and fled on foot with Roosevelt's cell phone.

He got aware with three hundred dollars Roosevelt had on him.

Roosevelt no longer drives overnight. His vision isn't the same. The attack haunts him.

"I'm scared to drive but it's the only way to make a living," said Roosevelt.

Anyone with information on the robbery is urged to call Broward Crime Stoppers at 954-493-TIPS (8477) or go to browardcrimestoppers.org.
