Florida-Based Pap Corps Raises $3.6M For Research At Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center

The Pap Corps Champions for Cancer Research, a South Florida-based grassroots organization, has awarded Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine a $3.6 million gift to advance research in precision cancer medicine at Sylvester, South Florida's only Cancer Center of Excellence.

The Pap Corps funding will support the basic and translational research at Sylvester that promotes discoveries of genetic markers for individual cancers and the development of targeted treatments that will lead to better outcomes.

"This money provides critical funding for the cutting-edge translational cancer research that is unfolding in our labs and our clinics," said Stephen D. Nimer, M.D., Director of Sylvester and a world-renowned expert in leukemia. "By combining expertise in targeted therapies, immunotherapies, interventional radiology, stem cell transplantation and various surgical advances, we are able to offer each patient the individualized care that they need."

Sylvester is among the nation's leading cancer centers, combining the strength of 130 cancer researchers and 150 cancer specialists who work collaboratively to discover, develop and deliver the most effective ways to prevent, detect, treat and cure individual cancers. And that leads to better outcomes, fewer side effects and more hope.

The check was presented Thursday, May 14 at the annual donor luncheon at the Boca West Country Club in Boca Raton, where Pap Corps President JoAnne Goldberg praised the group for its unyielding dedication to fighting this disease.

"Members of the Pap Corps are proud to work so hard to advance precision medicine right here in our own backyard," Goldberg said.

The Pap Corps is one of the largest all-volunteer fundraising organizations in South Florida, with more than 50 chapters and 21,000 members dedicated to raising money for cancer research at Sylvester. In the last 60 years, The Pap Corps has provided more than $50 million to support research discoveries made in Sylvester's labs.
