MIAMI (CBSMiami) – Longtime South Florida broadcast journalist Kelley Mitchell died Sunday night.

Mitchell worked at two local stations, channels 7 and 10, and most recently was on the radio at WLRN.

According to CBS4 news partner's the Miami Herald, Mitchell died Sunday night at home with her husband, photojournalist Kirk Wade, by her side. She was 58. Mitchell was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2002.

Mitchell, the paper reports, suddenly collapsed.

"The one blessing is that I was home with her," Wade told the paper. "Over the years Kelley was so sick so many times and she was such a warrior. She fought through breast cancer, she fought through pneumonia and other illnesses and was in and out of the hospital so many times. … She won so many large battles. She always had the will to survive and sometimes, maybe sometimes, your body says, 'You're done.' "

Mitchell will be missed by countless fans and colleagues across South Florida.

"Kelley was the real deal. What you saw on the television screen was what you got in person, and that's what made her so special," CBS4's Eliott Rodriguez said. "She always brought a smile to my face when I ran into her on news assignments. The frown came later when I saw her story on the air was better than mine."

She leaves behind her husband and her two dogs, Oscar and Felix, that meant the world to her.
