MIAMI (CBSMiami) – They have helped tackle dirty laundry, use less energy, less water, and less detergent, however, front loading washing machines may be triggering more service calls, more allergies and more lawsuits than manufacturers ever expected.

Carrie Sax bought a front load washing machine six years ago.

"So about 4-6 months, discoloration seal and also clothes started to smell," said Sax.

Sax said she's followed the manufacturer's advice on cleaning the mold on her washer but nothing has really worked. Apparently she's not alone, front load washing machines are leading to more and more service calls.

Michael Vogler said the machine has left him high and dry as well.

Vogler is one of the lead plaintiffs in a class-action lawsuit against one of the many manufacturers.

"You could say it was a clothes spoiler instead of a clothes washer," Vogler said.

He noticed his allergies worse, his clothes smelled, and discovered the slimy stuff on his clothes from the rubber.

Class action lawsuit are pending against several washing machine makers.

The suits claim the machines are defective with designs and airtight seals that create breeding grounds for black bacteria—or biofilm.

Attorneys also argue that manufacturers blame the customer for not cleaning the machine, saying it's not a common problem but service companies called out couldn't disagree more.

With undercover cameras rolling, it was said over and over again how common the problem really is.

"You can't imagine how it smells. Like somebody died, I have to go outside."

In court documents Whirlpool is accused of marketing a product to combat mold and make millions even though it claimed there were few complaints about the problem.

Volger said when he complained to Frigidaire, he was told to buy a new $200 part.

Sax said she's going to pay the couple hundred dollars for a new seal. Volger is choosing to go with the top end loader while waiting for a day in court.

Electrolux disputes the allegations. LG Electronics said it's developed a variety of features on its front load washers to help consumers better care for their washers. Sears and Whirlpool reject any claims that their front loading washing machines are defective.
