MIAMI (CBSMiami) - Students returning a holiday weekend to the main campus of Florida International University were anxious to learn Monday what prompted an incident notification.

Over the weekend a reported sexual assault involving a football player occurred in a dorm room on campus. The same campus where banners decrying "It's on us to stop sexual assault" are hung.

"I didn't really know what to think about it," said student Jorge Mejia.

"That is shocking because I never expected to hear something like that on this campus," said fellow student Stephanie Martinez.

FIU said they received reports of a sexual assault early Saturday morning. They didn't send out the notification until later that night.

Martinez got hers at 10:07 p.m.

"Earlier today FIU police received the report that an assault occurred," began the alert email which then stated that is happened on the main campus. It concluded, "the FIU police department is currently conducting a thorough investigation."

The email also reminded students to be aware of their surroundings.

"Of course it was something to be concerned about," said Mejia.

"It's something we need to stomp out eventually just having signs on campus aren't going to stop things from happening," said Mejia.

FIU says the notification was sent to the students instead of alert because there was no imminent threat. The student and player were acquaintances.

The athletics department would not say if the player had been suspended pending further investigation. They said they take a situation like this on a case by case basis and would take action, if any was required, when their investigation was complete.
