HOLLYWOOD (CBSMiami) – A 6-year-old boy remains in the hospital Monday after he nearly drowned at a popular Broward County water park.

Dozens of families enjoying Easter Sunday at T.Y. Park watched as lifeguards worked to revive the boy.

Hollywood Fire said at last check the boy was in stable condition.

"There were hundreds of people here and at least 15 to 20 lifeguards so it almost doesn't make sense," said Dina Knight, a park visitor.

The child, according to witnesses, was not breathing when he was pulled from the pool at the park's Castaway Island.

Lifeguards rushed to help the boy, as well as to find the guardian of the child.

"They were trying to resuscitate him, do CPR, at some point I saw the lifeguards, like, cheering," Knight said.

According to aquatics director Nunzio girdano the child is alive because of the heroic efforts of those lifeguards who were on duty.

"They're required to do four hours a month of in service training and as a matter of fact that very morning they had rehearsed that very scenario," he said.

Crime scene investigators showed up to photograph the pool but wouldn't reveal any details about the investigation.

The child was taken to Joe DiMaggio Children's Hospital conscious and breathing, according to witnesses.

Knight said she was praying the boy pulls through.

"It's really sad, we're hoping he's OK. A little girl who was 4 asked her mommy 'why is he sleeping' so we're really praying, especially on this day, that he's OK and he will live and that he's going to survive this," Knight said.

The child was visiting with his grandfather and park officials said they had trouble locating him until paramedics arrived.
