MIAMI (CBSMiami) - A bicyclist was killed in an early morning hit and run crash in Coral Gables on Thursday.

The body of an unidentified man was taken away to the Medical Examiners Office.

The accident happened around 3 AM at the intersection of Bird Road and Granada Boulevard.

He was hit riding his bicycle and left to die in the middle of the road. The driver never stopped.

Officers found the victim's yellow bike and shoe four blocks away discarded by the road.

"We don't know if the bike was dislodged or the driver stopped and pulled it out. It's a large crime scene,"said Coral Gables Officer Kelly Denham.

The scene of the accident is near the University of Miami, but police do not believe the person was a student.

"We don't think it's a U.M. student. We don't know who he is. The driver did not remain on scene," said Denham.

Police said a canine officer spotted the body in the middle of the intersection just after 3 a.m.

"It's becoming the culture here in South Florida and it's just disturbing to leave someone here in the roadway struck," said Denham.

Cyclists say this is a popular route but traffic moves fast.

"It's horrible. Just horrible," said a cyclist who was on the route Thursday. "People just need to slow down and respect the cyclists."

Police are asking anyone who was on Bird Road early Thursday to think about if they saw anything unusual and to call Crime Stoppers 305-473-TIPS.
