Medicaid Fight May Cost Florida $1 Billion Federal Grant

MIAMI (CBSMiami/AP) — Before the Florida Legislative season has even begun, they may be faced with a challenge to fill a $1 billion hole in the state's health care budget.

The Obama administration said the state could lose the federal funding covering uninsured, low-income hospital patients this summer and wants Florida to expand its Medicaid program to cover about 1 million uninsured Floridians under the Affordable Care Act.

Republican state House leaders have refused to consider the expansion. They say they don't want to expand an already broken system and also worry the federal government won't follow through on its promise to pay 100 percent of the bill in 2016 and 90 percent after that.

The 60-day legislative session begins Tuesday.
