LARGO (CBSMiami/AP) —A judge sentenced an Uruguayan man to 30 years in prison in connection to a Tampa Bay area crash that killed two people.

A Pinellas County judge sentenced 26-year-old Diego Cavalieri on Friday. Without a deal in place, Cavalieri previously pleaded guilty to two counts of vehicular homicide and two counts of reckless driving with serious bodily injury.

Authorities say Cavalieri was driving nearly 70 mph in a 35-mph zone on a Largo road on Christmas Day 2011 when he lost control of his Ford Fusion and crashed into an oncoming Buick. Two of his passengers died, while another passenger and the Buick's driver survived.

Soon after the crash, authorities say Cavalieri left the U.S. for Uruguay, where he was arrested and returned to Pinellas County in 2013.
