MIAMI (CBSMiami) -- Authorities are investigating a police involved shooting in northwest Miami-Dade County on Tuesday.

Unmarked police cars surrounded a Nissan Murano with a bullet hole in the windshield and a shattered back window.

Meantime, a Glock automatic with an extended magazine lay on the ground.

Miami-Dade Police said the gun belongs to 24-year old Wadson Darnel Sagaille, who was wanted for second-degree murder in Miami.

According to Miami-Dade Police, their robbery intervention detail was helping Miami Police track down Sagaille.

Their surveillance led them to a funeral home where Sagaille was attending a service for his brother, CBS 4 has learned.

"He was followed out of the funeral home and we waited until he was away from the crowd and we could stop him in a safe location," said Miami-Dade Deputy Directory Juan Perez.

According to police, when they stopped Sagaille at NW 17th Ave and NW 73rd Street he reached for a weapon.

"The suspect produced a firearm. It's there lying on the street. Shots were exchanged I'm not sure if the suspect shot, but he was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries," said Perez.

Darrin Ellis was leading the procession and told our news partners at the Miami Herald he heard the gunshots.

"I thought it was another typical shooting in the community and I thought, 'Oh God, please don't let anybody be hurt.' But then the phone call came in that it was somebody from the funeral I was just at, it touched my heart," Ellis told the Herald. "I'm just as baffled as anyone else. I'm trying to put some sense to the matter and try to come up with a resolution to see what's really going on here and try to get to the truth."

As of Tuesday evening, Sagaille is listed in stable condition.

No of officers were injured during the incident.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) is investigating, as part of a new agreement with the county to determine whether a crime was committed during a police-involved shooting or in custody death after years of complaints and controversies.

This is the first time the agreement has been put into practice since it went into effect in early January, a police spokesman said.

The officer who pulled the trigger is on paid leave pending the results of the investigation.
