Top 5 Professional Miami Sports Events of 2014

As we wrap up the final hours of 2014, let's take a look back at some of the most enjoyable professional sporting events from the perspective of Miami fans. With apologies to the Panthers and Marlins, the Dolphins and Heat ruled this list, as expected.

5. Dolphins Blanket Chargers 37-0 (November 2)

Winning three of their last four heading into this home clash between two of the better teams in the AFC at the time, the Dolphins put together their most dominating performance of the season. Ryan Tannehill tossed three touchdowns, the defense sacked Philip Rivers four times, and it was Miami's first shutout since 2006. After improving their record to 5-3, this franchise was thinking playoffs.

4. Heat Slash Cavs on Christmas Day (December 25)

Just a week ago, the Miami Heat ruined LeBron James' first return back to the place he called home for the last four years, topping the Cavs in startling fashion 101-91. With Chris Bosh still out with an injury, Dwyane Wade and Luol Deng carried the load, combining for 56 points, 13 rebounds, and 13 assists. Miami pummeled Cleveland inside, winning the battle in the paint 44-28. In a somewhat rebuilding year where there are no longer championship-or-bust expectations, this game will remain a highlight for this season.

3. Dolphins Annihilate Patriots in Season Opener (September 7)

While the San Diego win was more commanding, there's no question this thrashing of a division rival in the season opener was more gratifying. The Dolphins defense held Tom Brady and the mighty Patriots offense to 20 points, all coming in the first half. Cameron Wake led the way with two sack-fumbles as Miami won 33-20 in front of an electric South Florida crowd.

2. LeBron Sets Personal and Franchise Mark With 61 Points vs. Bobcats (March 3)

The most offensively potent game of LeBron James' career -- and in Miami Heat history -- came against the Bobcats in early March. King James dropped 61 points on 22-for-33 shooting, including 8 of 10 from behind the arc. The 124-107 victory was a special night for Heat Nation.

1. Heat Beat Pacers, Enter 4th Straight NBA Finals (May 30)

Up three games to two, the Heat knew they needed to take care of business in Game 6 and halt the pesky Pacers for good on their home floor. LeBron James and Chris Bosh added 25 apiece but it was Rashard Lewis' 13 points and three 3-pointers that made the difference as Miami smashed Indiana 117-92. The Heat became just the third franchise in NBA history to make four consecutive NBA Finals. It will remain a monumental day in Heat history despite coming up short against the Spurs in the next round.
