Line Forms For Free Holiday Meal Ticket

MIAMI (CBSMiami) - Dozens of people have already started to line up in a Little Havana neighborhood to receive a voucher for a free holiday meal.

The vouchers will be handed out Wednesday morning at 7 a.m. by the Latin Chamber of Commerce.

Tuesday morning, about fifty people were already camped out on the sidewalk in front of the CAMACOL building at 1401 W Flagler Street to be some of the first in line. Some people arrived as early as Friday.

"To be the first one in line because this is going to be so crowded," said Junior Rios

The first 3,000 people will receive a voucher. The food baskets, which are valued up to $120 each, will be given out on December 17th.

"It means a lot not just for me for my family that's home," said Jesus Cora.

The baskets contain groceries for a full Christmas dinner, Latin-style. The food is donated by local companies.

The baskets usually include pork, sausage, rice, biscuits, desert items, canned peaches, salt, juices and milk.

"It's good for a beautiful dinner for Christmas," Felix Martini who takes advantage of the event every year.

This is the 29th year for the program. It has grown into one of the largest holiday food drives in South Florida.
