MIAMI (CBSMiami) -- A driver ,still at large, struck and killed a homeless elderly man while he was crossing a Miami street on Saturday morning.

Detective said they are still looking for the driver involved in the hit and run that occurred at the intersection of Northwest 23rd Court and Northwest 7th Street.

The elderly man was trying to cross Northwest 7th Street with the help of a walker when, according to witnesses, a gray/silver colored vehicle hit the man.

Detectives said a possibly unknown model Mazda, was seen driving off in an eastbound direction after the crash.

Miami Fire Rescue crews rushed the elderly man to the hospital where he died.

Officers said the homeless elderly man was known in the area.

The Chairman of the Miami-Dade County Homeless Trust Ronald Book released a statement regarding the man's death, saying, "The driver who hit and killed one of our community's homeless this morning took away the only thing he could really call his own - his life.  Today's hit and run is a tragedy beyond measure and we are saddened to be reminded of how callous some people can be.  A hit-and-run is inexcusable, no matter the person involved.  Every life has value, especially the 'least and lost'.  The Miami-Dade County Homeless Trust is grateful to Miami police who are doing everything they can to solve this crime."

Detective are asking anyone with information to step forward. They are looking for the driver, described as as white male in his 50s wearing glasses or the vehicle involved, possibly a gray/silver Mazda vehicle with extensive front end/windshield damage.

Anyone with information is urged to call Miami-Dade Crimestoppers at (305) 471- TIPS.
