HOLLYWOOD (CBSMiami) — An altercation between two Hollywood Police officers and a man allegedly causing a disturbance left the man dead and one of the officers recovering from injuries.

Authorities said two officers were responding to a call of a man causing a disturbance – walking around, acting suspiciously – along the 1800 block of Jackson Street at around 2:40 p.m. on Monday afternoon.

Investigators say the man became violent with the officers and attacked them. Detectives say at least one officer deployed a taser on the man.

"The taser was deployed and that was the only instrument used in the altercation as far as the police officer is concerned," said Hollywood Police Lt. Derik Alexander.

When the man arrived at Memorial Regional Hospital, doctors pronounced him dead, Lt. Alexander said.

A resident said she saw one of the officers bleeding from the head after the altercation. Investigators would not confirm the officer's injuries but said the officer was taken to Memorial Regional Hospital where he was expected to recover.

Police have not released the name of the man who died. However, a neighbor of the man said she knows him and believed his behavior over the previous day or two to be suspicious.

"He was talking about pedophiles in the neighborhood and some cat lady and that people were being mean to him," the neighbor said. "I was nervous because I have kids and he was shouting and stuff, he was kind of talking to himself. It was crazy."

Investigators would not say what sparked the altercation but the neighborhood was full of speculation.

"I heard that he got naked and was running around and that the cops were called and he got tased for throwing something at them," the neighbor said.

Detectives from the Internal Affairs Unit of the Hollywood Police Department were on scene for hours today looking at the evidence, speaking to witnesses and trying to determine exactly what transpired.
