Arrest Made In Threats To 2nd Coral Springs High School

FT LAUDERDALE (CBSMiami) - For a second time this week, police in Coral Springs are investigating threats made to a high school on a social media website.

Thursday night on Instagram, someone using the name "CGHSWAR" posted several messages which said there would be fights, fires and a shooting on Friday at Coral Glades High School.

One message read "WILL BE PULLING FIRE ALARMS & STARTING FIRES EXACTLY AT 11:55 AM!!!!!!!! TMRW AT CORAL GLADES HIGHSCHOOL! ALSO MAJOR SHOOTOUT & FIGHTS!"

In response to the threats Coral Glades High Principal Springs Steven Carruth tweeted out "@ooh_leanne We are aware of the intentions of a few. Authorities are tracking these students and we have a plan to ensure everyone's safety."

"All the high schools and middle schools here in Coral Springs are on a code yellow which is basically restricted movement, it means that you can't freely move about the campus as you normally would," said police spokesman Lt. Brad McKeone Friday morning.

The school district said Coral Glades would be operating a normal schedule of classes and activities on Friday. But that didn't reassure the steady parade of parents who showed up at the school to pull their children out early.

"From what I understand from my daughter, the school might go on lockdown pretty soon so that's why we decided to get her out before the lockdown began," said Khadim Bakish.

Eleven-fifty five came and went. No fire alarms were pulled, no fights broke out and there was no shooting.

Many students complained that with so many teachers and classmates missing from school, they didn't get a lot of work done.

"Our school life is now impacted," said Rachael Jofery.  "All the people who stayed home today, they missed out on a day of school and a lot of the people didn't get to learn."

Coral Springs police said they were aware of the social media postings and had increased their presence at the school. They arrested a 16-year old girl for making threats on Instagram.

Police also arrested a 12-year old girl at Sawgrass Springs Middle School for making an Instagram threat.   The girl reportedly made it Thursday night in which she said she was going to shoot up the school with an AK47.

She was led out of school in handcuffs, wearing a "Little Mermaid" t-shirt.

"We will be prosecuting everyone and anyone who does this," said Coral Springs Police Sgt. Carla Kmiotek.

Police also had an increased presence Friday at J.P. Taravella High where online threats were made earlier this week.

According to officials, a fire was started inside the school Monday and fights took place inside the school. A 15-year old has been charged in the fire.

Another fire was started Tuesday and a student was arrested for setting the fire.

The fires were in a boys bathroom trash can and a boys' locker room.

"I think it's crazy how people will do that, like setting fires in school, I don't think it's needed and it's not what school is for, but I think they're handling the situation pretty well," added student Faith Lefler.

A fire alarm was pulled Tuesday and students were evacuated to the football field, officials said.

The incident spurred what officials said were threats to students' safety that circulated on social media.

The threats, school leaders confirmed, were for a possible shooting at the school.

"It's just social media, everybody talks on social media, it's just talking so I wouldn't really take it like that," said student Gavin Robinson.

School security has been ramped up the past few days and meetings with parents are expected.

Broward School Superintendent Robert Runcie said the district is working closely with police to find out who's responsible at both Taravella and Coral Glades.

"We're going to prosecute you to the fullest extent of the law, this is very serious, folks need to stop this," said Runcie.

The State Attorney's Office has said they will be pursuing charges.
