Gables Law Firm Thief Caught On Camera

MIAMI (CBSMiami) - A man who thought he'd be clever by repositioning a building's security camera before he burglarized one of its offices didn't realize the mirror had to two faces, and both were his.

In happened September 19th, around 7:30 p.m. An elevator security camera in the building at 3211 Ponce De Leon Boulevard captured the man walking into the hallway in front of the elevator checking for anything that may identify him later - like the security camera itself.

A short time later, the camera's lens shifted so it points toward a mirror wall on the camera's left. The camera then captures the same man, and his reflection in the mirror, cross the hallway towards Suite 200.

Police say off camera the man entered the suite of a law firm and stole approximately $3,700. He and his reflection were then caught on camera leaving the office.

The law firm doesn't usually keep money in the office overnight, but when a client made a cash payment on a late Friday afternoon the cash was put in a locked drawer for safe keeping.

"A client had just given me that money and I couldn't go to the bank," said Carlos Del Amo, the founder and president of the law firm. "Usually I don't have money in the office."

Marks can be seen where the locked drawer was pried open, after which the intruder took more petty cash from another office drawer.

It's thought that the thief may have had inside information. The law office wasn't ransacked and only drawers with cash were targeted.

"Not only did he know where to go, but he knew at this time there would be a substantial amount of money there, which normally there wouldn't be," added Del Amo.

Anyone who can help police identify the man is urged to call Crime Stoppers at (305) 471-TIPS (8477).
