Two South Florida Locations Included In Jimmy John's Security Breach

MIAMI (CBSMiami) - Another big company has reported a security breach in which customers' credit and debit card information may have been compromised.

This time it's sandwich purveyor Jimmy John's.

According to the Illinois-based company, approximately 216 stores  appear to be affected;  two of those stores are in South Florida.

The first is the Jimmy John's at 1507 N Federal Highway in Ft. Lauderdale.  The company said customer information may have been taken between July 1st and August 4th. The second location is the Jimmy John's at 330 Clematis Street in West Palm Beach. Information may have been  accessed between July 1st and August 2nd at that store.

One customer in Ft. Lauderdale was surprised to hear of the breach.

"I'm thinking everything is safe but I guess not," said Jimmy John's customer Linda Lee.

Another customer was not surprised.

"That's why I use cash," said  customer Rob Price. He doesn't take any chances with his information especially because he says we're hearing more and more about major security breaches.

"Internet  cyber crime is the number one thing going out there and there's smarter people and more and more people sitting around and thinking about more things to do," said Price. "Cash is king it's accepted everywhere."

Home Depot and Target have both recently dealt with breaches potentially affecting tens of millions of customers.  Now Jimmy Johns is urging anyone who used a credit or debit card at one of its affected locations to keep a close eye on statements, and monitor credit reports.

Cards impacted were those swiped at the stores, not those entered manually or online. The credit and debit card information at issue may include the card number and in some cases the cardholder's name, verification code, and/or the card's expiration date. Information entered online, such as customer address, e-mail, and password, remains secure.

Jimmy John's says it has taken steps to prevent this type of event from occurring in the future, including installing encrypted swipe machines and reviewing its policies involving third-party vendors.

Jimmy John's is offering identity protection services to impacted customers. Those interested can call (855) 398-6442.
